Robert Boen Walls was Professor of Music at Oregon State University from 1947 until his retirement in 1974. He directed all OSU choral activities for 27 years and was head of the Music Department from 1947 until 1965. He established the Choralaires, a select choir with the most talented singers form the larger men's and women's choruses and led European tours by the Choraliares in 1971 and 1973. On Dec. 7, 1922, Oregon Agricultural College was granted a license to begin broadcasting radio station KFDJ, which had been put together as a lab experiment by OAC Physics Professor Jacob Jordan. The station's first broadcast was on Jan. 23, 1923 from the third floor of Apperson Hall. Music has been a part of the Oregon State University curriculum since 1871, when the first reference was made to it in the college catalog. Vocal study began in 1887 and a Cadet Band was formed in 1891. A Department of Music was first listed in the 1895-96 catalog. A conservatory style School of Music was organized in 1908 as a self-supporting department within the college, directed by William Frederick Gaskins.
